In the world of record low unemployment and intense competition for skilled workers, it is often the employee who is calling the shots. Pay raises, stock options, incentives, benefits. In today's workplace these are increasingly viewed these as entitlements, rather than as gifts. Employees have such a sense of job security that they do not believe they have to earn their rewards. And, when people don't have to earn what they get, they take it for granted and all motivational value is lost.
